to get votes. And to add to it: what does the government do that is better than the private sector?

The government rarely does anything better than the private sector.

Some people really do want socialized health care for reasons other than just votes... afterall, where do those votes come from?.. people who believe in it.

The problem is, it takes the responsibility off the individual and makes them more reliant on government. I think that is insanity. The individuals of the US must not be turned into sheep. I think this policy, as well as a number of other policies, use tax dollars in unconstitutional terms. We must put the responsibility on the individual to make their own choices about health care, and we must rely on individual communities to support those who cannot afford it. It is not the responsibility of the common taxpayer, but rather the responsibility of the individual, the family and the community. Those who do not take this responsibility must not be given concessions! Failure to think and work for yourself must not be rewarded! No matter how heartbreaking it is.

Less government, not more.

First of all, there is no such thing as "free" health care. This has nothing to do with improving health care at all. This is a power grab, because there are enough ignorant people that can not produce enough income to provide for themselves. These are the people that the "health care is a right" politicos are after. Health care can not be a right, as rights are defined in this country. If you want to find out what universal health care is like, imagine if the folks at child protective services, child support enforcement, or the D.M.V. decided what health care you need. The government can not do anything better than the private sector, by any measure. Once you move beyond the local level, ALL Government employees are government employees because they lack the ability to produce........and being able to produce is one of the key ingredients to the U.S.'s abundance.

I have traveled all over the world and lived in Kosovo and the UK. I've been to the Caribbean, Sweden, Jordan, and Ireland just to make a few. Before I went, I moaned about health care in the US. Now, its obvious that free health care doesnt work. In the UK where there is National Health, you can wait for months to get seen by a doctor. That is if you are lucky enough to be accepted. Kosovo, I was just lucky I was american because I could go to the base and get seen. Jordan? Yeah, whatever. Nothing is free in this country and making a free health care system is just setting ourselves up for a huge failure and probably disaster

Its not free, anymore than Social Security is free. And our present system isn't free either.
Health care isn't a frivolous whim, its cancer, and prenatal, neonatal care, its inoculations and helping people stay healthy and caring for the ill and elderly, what its not is cosmetic surgery. A good government runs good programs, ones that work because sound people are put in charge of them no matter which party is in office. For profit insurers look to limit care to the detriment of the very people who pay them. They look to make a profit for their companies by denying benefits and cutting payments to doctors and increasing co payments. If they would put that money into things that benefit the people who pay them I'd have no problem, but the profit motive in this case causes us all to suffer. If France, England, Canada and the rest of the industrialized world can do a fair to excellent job of it why shouldn't we. After all, we managed the Marshall plan quite well, and there are few problems with Social Security. Do you think we just possibly are hearing only the insurance companies side of the story on universal health care? After all, they are the ones with the most to lose by it, and my momma always told me to look where the money goes.

And for the record, I have private health insurance.

Wonder why the answer to all the problems is to let government take an even larger portion of our earnings? First they took an income tax on wages, then Social Security and then Medicare. Next, Health Care. Problems solved? You kidding? None of these have yet solved our problems in the way they were intended. But they sure have created a bunch of other problems.

Why stop at free health care? Why not free food for everyone? And housing, clothes, water. What about entertainment, don't we have a right to free entertainment? And internet? I want free music! Not just from the radio, I want CD's!
Liberals don't get the concept that when government provides one thing for "free", it may as well provide everything for free. That would be called communism.

I will answer your second question first. The only thing the government can do better than the private sector is screw it up to where the cost burden on the already burdened middle class will be more than we can handle. There is no such thing as a "free" lunch or "free" medical. Who do they think is going to pay for this? gee.....the taxpayer perhaps???

Nothing is free and one way or another you will pay for the health care.

It is absolutely just a means to get votes. It would be a complete disaster. Healthcare in Canada and the UK is terrible. Don't believe Hillary and Obama's hype.
