and how many can fit in the tank

Oscars without a doubt. I have kept and bred Oscars as well as a few of the more common piranha species. Piranha are hard to care for properly and are in fact fish that prefer to hide most of the time, even when kept in a group setting. In a tank of that size, I would suggest 3-4 adult Oscars, but even then be ready for fighting if a pair forms.

I own pirhana so I am a little bias, ha, but I think 3 pirhana would be a good number for an 80 gal. They do get messy but I love watching their personalities come out. I have four, one is dominant, one tries to be his best friend, one is the little runt, and one is the laid back "whatever" kind of guy.

IMO both are equally boring. Neither really do much other than sit around and wait to be fed. No real personality in either fish.

An 80 gallon would be tight for 2 adult oscars, and tight for 4 adult pirhana.

80 gallons is really not enough for piranhas. You should seriously consider salvinis, sajicas, firemouths, rainbow cichlids, and jack dempseys. You will have much more action and color than oscars or piranhas. Another option would be to do an African mbuna tank. There is lots of color and plenty of aggression.

Oscars are really interesting, especially the longer you have them. You can put three or four in a tank that size just make sure they are very close to the same size when you put them in there or they will kill each other. If you ever add any more to the tank make sure they are the same size as the ones in there and change your tank around to disrupt their territories.

try looking at one oscar.

Red bellies will like to be in a school, and in a school they would need a much larger tank.

Oscars are good for 75 gallons, so you can get one and have it as the center piece.

80 isn't that big. I would go for the Oscars since you can do a couple of them and they don't eat each other if you forget to feed them. Good luck!!!
