The Republican party used to believe in
Limited government
Lower taxes
Strong national defense
Personal responsibility
Under Bush they became arrogant and spent money like drunken sailors
Democrats of the JFK era were more like these Republicans I allude to. Todays democrats believe in
Big government
Raising taxes
Talking to our enemy, even when it never works.
Government providing all to everyone.
This is socialism. If we had more Zell Miller democrats, I would switch in a blink. My party has sold me out.

not a whole lot, actually...
"real" Republicans died out with Reagan, who turned the party into something entirely different than it was when Lincoln was a Republican.
"real" Democrats died out when it became impossible to run for election without raising (roughly) $15 million for a Senate seat and (roughly) $8 million for a House seat, and they started taking private money as well.
now, if you mean, what is the difference between liberals and conservatives, that's a different question.

Not as much as they would have you believe. Most of if not all the people who control both parties are very wealthy. Their primary concern is to take care of them selves and their own kind. If you think that any of them care about the average person, the working person, the working poor etc. get real take a look around and see what they give you and then what they take from you. They take more than what they give and they take care of them selves first.

Mostly, it's rhetoric. The Democrats spout support for the average American and the Republicans support a trickle down economy (like that ever worked!).
Both parties are highly dependent on an elite establishment for their survival. Vote Green or not at all.

Republicans generally are against socialism, and big government. They are more for individual freedom and lower tax's.
The Democrats are generally for bigger government, tons of social hand out programs. Of course more hand outs means higher tax's. They are the big brother party.

Republicans were killed by neocons and religious fanatics. Fox TV and right wing hate radio came in and turned what was left into a group that is afraid of being killed by terrorists.
