Short answer to the question is that the result should stand. The Laws make clear that the umpires are the sole judges of what constitutes fair and unfair play. Note also that the Laws clearly state that the fielding captain has no right to appeal the use of substitutes.
I guess what you are really asking is whether the umpire should have allowed the opposing player to bat.
Law 2.4 states: A player is allowed to bat, bowl or field even though a substitute has previously acted for him.
Law 2.5 goes on to spell out exclusions on when the player may bowl, but crucially there is no law against where the player may bat. The player may bat at any time.
The ICC Rules for ODI cricket amend Law 2.5 to put in place the exclusion for when a player may bat, but unless the game in question was agreed to be held under ICC ODI rules including their amendments, this would not apply.
Even when played under ODI rules, if the player did not field for a reason such as being struck by a ball after the teams had been nominated but before the start of play, he would still be entitled to bat in any position. Also, if his team had already been batting for longer than the opposing team's innings, he would still be entitled to bat higher than Number 7.

Since the decision of the umpire is final, the result of the match will stay and there will be no change whatsoever.
