Sometimes late at night, when I'm watching TV I'll be dozing off in that place where I'm not fully awake but I'm not fully asleep.. just barely conscious.. and then my entire body will literally just JUMP suddenly and wake me up, like a reaction you'd get to some seriously ice-cold water being poured on you, except even more. Any reason why this happens? It doesn't happen all the time, just every once in a while. Kind of annoying.

This is perfectly normal. It's called hypnagogic myoclonus. This usually happens when the brain is slipping into the subconscious and some vivid dream happens, jerking you awake. It can also be anxiety. Another theory is that when the brain is shutting down, it may interpret that as muscle death, so the brain sends a signal to the muscles to wake itself up. Research doesn't wholly support this, and there is no real consensus as to why this happens. It's just an annoyance, and it happens to me when I start to dream about jumping when I'm first falling asleep.

Lying flat in a bed you breathe almost exclusively involuntarily with your lungs and diaphragm through your nose and very minimally through your mouth with your transverse abdominals.

You're posture is probably about like mine after 30-60 minutes on the couch. At a 45 degree angle, about 60 percent of your breathing is involuntary and about 40 percent is manually.

When you doze off in an upright or semi-upright position, you relax the transverse abdominals and your jaw drops. It's like letting the air out of a balloon. The adrenaline burst wakes you up. Your body definitely doesn't want to suffocate or drown.

That crazy kickstart is why so many people with severe snoring and sleep apnea die of stroke.

oh
that same thing happens to me
but in my situation
ill b in the state where im kind of partially dreaming
just kind of running through situations in my head
and then i'll be say
near the edge of a cliff, or somewhere where I might lose my balance
and then I will, but hey don't get me wrong
I'm no scientist
but i believe it has something to do with STIMULUS in your brain telling your body to jump. Just because its the impulse thats there from when your awake.

To me it sounds as though the body is rousing itself; you are in that in-between state, become partially awakened, and this "jump" brings you to full-awareness. I have had it happen quite a lot. But, I also have narcolepsy, a sleeping disorder. Probably it is a case of your body wanting to awaken the brain, or the other way around...

Our body runs on electrical currents from the nervous system so when we go to bed and try rest our bodies there are residual currents that are running around trying to find a release. It's not big deal but it is annoying.
