While I was stranded in Anchorage last year, I inquired as to the minimum wage and was told $7.25 was the state minumum wage. That is why Wendys has a $1.49 menu rather than the $0.99 in the lower 48. Many states have a minimum wage that is higher than what the federal government sets. Remember, the federal "Minimum Wage" is just that, the minimum that a worker may be paid. There are a few jobs that have a lower minimum such as farm workers and waitresses. Speaking of farm workers, migrant workers, in Florida, get $.50 per 38 pound bushel of tomatoes.

I was parked at Cummins Northwest on Commercial Drive, two blocks off the Glenn Highway and would walk to Wendys on the corner of Reeves Blvd. and the Glenn Highway so I know about the Wendys menu. The union went on strike in Bellingham, WA at Cummins Norhtwest and the union hall sent picketeers over and paid them $50 for 4 hours of walking.

Diesel techs make $35+ per hour. Electricians make about the same. The pay is very good in Alaksa, but the cost of living is much higher than anywhere you may think of.
