I'm in charge of running the "win a goldfish" booth at my camp's carnival on Friday. Some of the kids have already been telling me that the fish always die in a day or 2, which I know is because nobody cares for them the right way. I'd like to print up some easy instructions that I can hand out with the fish, but I admit I have no idea what to do with them either! Anyone know what I can suggest to these people? I know they are not all running to Petco to get a huge tank and filtration system....

Lucky for you someone has already do this in the large part. I would print this and add to it a few lines about exchanging the fish for something more suitable for a smaller container if they or their child wishes to keep a smaller tank. Frankly, they really don't need to be told it's ok to keep it in a small bowl for a little while. We know experienced aquarium keepers can pull it off and know when to move the fish etc, but new people will just lose the fish.

Hope that helps.

Can you talk the carnival into giving out a smaller kind of fish, like a molly? Then you can give easy instructions about getting a cheap smaller tank with filtration, as opposed to the huge one for goldies. Good luck!

Now, the hard part is done and you can sit back and enjoy your aquarium. Remember to feed your fish small amounts of food two or three times per day, think about two flakes per fish each feeding. You'll want to remove about 20% of the water from your aquarium once every two weeks, and replace it with fresh, dechlorinated water of the same temperature. Change the filter (if applicable) according to the manufacturer's instructions. You also may want to have your water periodically tested (especially if your fish appear ill) for chemical imbalances. Many petstores that sell fish will do nitrate/nitrite and pH testing for free, and can offer suggestions to just about any problem you may run in to. Good luck!

Unfortunately, a huge tank and huge filtration is the only way to keep them for their whole lives indoors. They can grow to 24" and live for decades. Bettas are the only fish that should be kept in bowls, and alot of people will argue with me on that point. The fact is that goldfish will get huge and die in a small tank. They are truly pond fish.
