How do i repel deer flies and wat are the systoms of there bites?

I used to use citronella, but I don't really think it worked - I just liked the lemon smell. If you've got enough deer flies, I doubt that anything will really work - they're a real bugger to live with. The bite feels like somebody just stuck you with a red-hot pin, and I'd have a bit of itching for a little while afterward. Still, compared to poison ivy it's only a minor annoyance.

deet will repel them, they symptoms are just a burning sensation, short lived, but there are alot of them when they are there.
