Intel is faster and more expensive, AMD is doing a wonderful job keeping Intel honest and prices reasonable. If AMD folds as a company, we are all in trouble.

I think AMD is the better of the 2. A general rule of the thumb is that for the same performance, you can always get an AMD CPU for less.
True, Conroe is whipping AMD's fx-60 and fx-70 (although the AMD 6000+ is pretty good), but AMD intends to reply with k10 (barcelona and phenom fx). Some experts say that k10 may even be a match for penryn in hpc (high performance computing and gaming).
As mentioned above, we don't want an Intel or Nvidia monopoly, because they will jack prices right up, and they will have no more motivation to improve existing CPUs (CPU R&D is now a point of decreasing returns for increasing R&D costs).
On the downside, AMD has a reputation for more power consumption, and thus, more heat generation, but I still would rather buy an AMD CPU than an Intel CPU in times of parity. Right now though, I have an Intel CPU - I wish it were otherwise, but unfortunately ...

Top of the line processor from Intel is better than the one from AMD. However Intel costs a lot more. AMD has great processors at affordable prices, but if you're willing to spend more money then go with Intel.

AMD is newer technology. Intel is still in a lot. Get Duo Core with what ever you decide.
