The most liberal were the founders like Monroe, and Jefferson, but they were not decadent. we have become decadent since we have had a standing army, rather than a national guard and small army. and especially since we stopped having a citizen draft army. since WW2 we have grown more complacent and less concerned with our constitution and governance corruption is a the highest level ever all because we are lost in mass media frenzy of TV and movie stars and marketing madness from Madison ave. Honest open debate has been replaced by punditry, and politics is dominated by clever public relations men, what could be more destructive to freedom and democracy?

A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.

I think they are 2 separate things. Liberalism as you describe it, is a sense of tolerant view of people who fall outside the ruling class of the white heterosexual male. It means the inclusion of the other, meaning female or black, brown, asian etc, gay, transexual etc. I think there is a push from both liberal and conservative ends. But hopefully for the sake of equality and democracy, the liberalism will win out.
The decadance that I think you are talking about seems to be media driven. People like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, etc are pretty much Republican bush supporters and they have nothing to do with the description of liberal as I described it above. This kind of decadance is corporate and money driven or driven by excess in terms of sexual decadence (pedophilia), excess of money and flaunting of such and excess of flaunting excess for the sake of it, this is not ideologically driven. The Republicans and the Catholic church are pretty decadent as well as we witnessed with the pedophilia cases. So no, this is not something that is ideologically liberal in the least.

I disagree that that's what's happening.

I don't think we become more liberal with each generation. I think we become more liberal or conservative based on our global political climate. The decadence, I think, comes from the advancement of technology and availability of wealth.

Seems like we have been getting less liberal less decadent more open about what decadence is out there. In the "leave it to beaver" days, sex and drugs were out there but deeply hidden as was child and spousal abuse, homosexuality, and so on.

Absolutely there is a connection. Unfortunately the most liberal and decadent seem not to understand that it is this aspect of our culture that is most hated by the Islamists and yes even moderate Muslims.

PS: I am no stick in the mud but what seperates me from the super libs and their decadent lifestyles is that I understand that there is a time and a place for everything and somethings just arent meant to be done in public

Where is the decadence that you speak of? I don't see it where I live. I don't see anything happening that didn't since the beginning of time. It's just that things get more press today, giving it the appearance of "more" decadence.

your right and if you think of it, it's natural, not good in my opinion, but natural and to be expected. it's much easier to choose the route that is less disciplined. it takes work to be conservative, it means restricting yourself and not taking chances and going out on a limb. it means keeping your nose to the grindstone, working and saving. the weak among us will slide to the left and will seek or invent easier ways to make it in life, sometime successful and sometime not. I would prefer not to get into the moral or decadent side of the situation, to controversial. it all boils down to wants and needs. conservatives take care of needs and liberals fulfill wants.

I think there is a connection for sure. Lack of shame and honor has caused too many parents to raise their children with the opinion "Anything you want is OK with me I want to be your friend".

Great question.
