Although this trade won't happen, since the White Sox have suggested that they wouldn't ship Garland for anything less than a great deal, it actually wouldn't be a bad deal for the Braves.
My reasoning is this: The Braves have a solid lineup. Renteria has been a great help, but a good hitter is much easier to replace than a good pitcher. The Braves major problem is that their rotation is poor. They have Smoltz, who is good when he's healthy, and Hudson who has been streaky all year. Otherwise, they have Chuck James, Buddy Carlyle and Kyle Davies. Throw out Davies now, because he's been absolutely terrible. Both James and Carlyle have pitched well. James is on a bit of a hot streak, but he may blossom into a respectable third starter. I'd be a bit more worried about Carlyle. He has, admittedly, looked very good. But his successful starts have come against very poor teams: Pittsburgh, Florida, St. Louis, San Diego (a good team, but a dreadful offense), and Florida again. His other good start came against a good hitting Cleveland team. His number against teams under .500: 4-0 with a 1.97 era in 5 starts. Against teams over .500: 1-2 with a 7.56 era in 6 games, 5 of which were starts. Obviously, its easier to pitch against a bad team, but these splits ought to concern Braves fans. He has been absolutely clobbered by good teams. So if he can keep pitching against bad teams, he'll be fine. But I dont know how reliable he'll be in a pennant race.
Jon Garland is a steady pitcher, which the Braves need. Plus, he eats up innings. The Braves have a very poor bullpen, backed by a very unreliable closer. They need guys who can take the ball into the eighth inning so Bobby Cox can avoid throwing out his lousy bullpen. So honestly, I think this would be a good move for the Braves. Sacrifice a little from a top offense to shore up the rotation and help out the bullpen at the same time.
The Braves don't have a whole lot else to offer. They won't trade Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Yunel Escobar, and Scott Thorman has pretty much no value on the market. If the Braves won't ship Salty or Escobar, and, hypothetically, Renteria, they would have to ship Chuck James and some minor leaguers, but they can't afford to give up pitching. So if the Braves are going to pick up a starter, I think Renteria may be the only way they can go, unless Braves management will shift its views on moving Salty or Escobar.
If the Braves did make this deal, they could always ship Garland after the Braves stretch run fails. A decent starting pitcher will probably have more value than a hitter who had a great season but has been inconsistent over his career.

I was wondering the same thing cause if they want to make a serious run at the playoffs and ever the world series they are going to need Renteria. He has been their most consistent offensive player the entire year and him hitting in front of Chipper gives the Braves a great chance of scoring early and often. Escobar is good but he won't be able to impact the Braves this year like Renteria can.

They should trade away Kelly Johnson instead and get a Starting Pitcher if possible
Oh my Edgar Renteria..he's a keeper
LIke you said it would be one of the dumbest trades ever if Braves traded away Renteria (all star snub) for Garland
If Garland was as good as a couple years ago when he won like 10 games in a row to start off the season then I would take him but his stuff is not the same this year...Renteria is a top 5 MLB shortop..Jon garland is not even a top 20 Starting Pitcher in the league

More than likely it would be a money thing. Escobar's gonna be at least solid, dependable, if not multiple All-Star. We also could just be after Garland for this year, and deal him for a couple quality AAA pitchers after we win the WS. Where's Renteria in terms of contract right now? How many years left? You gotta admit, his trade value is a lot better now than it was when we picked him up. BUT I don't want to see this happen, unless we also get another pitcher or 2, at least one of them being a quality prospect. Overall, yes, stupid move.

I have not heard that and find it hard to believe the Braves would make that trade. With Renteria hitting over .330 and Garland having his problems the Braves would come out on the losing end of that deal.

The Braves think that Yunel Escobar is the shortstop of the future and that Jon Garland is a pitcher that can help them win now and is young enough to help them win down the road also. I don't agree with their thinking because I think Escobar should take Chipper Jones' job once he retires or Kelly Johnson's job because he hasn't been doing well lately.

Garland for Renteria is the DUMBEST move ever! If it happens, TIme Warner should be run out of Atlanta as quickly as possible and the team given back to Ted!

Try this one.Get rid of Chipper's tired whiny a.. and turn Escobar into a 3rd baseman. Then trade Thorman and let Salty play 1st. Renteria stays and you have a decent infield. You can always package some minor leaguers with Chipper for some pitching

Edgar is worth a lot more than Garland. I would not make that trade if I were the Braves

I just watched Edgar in this series with the Giants and I think his stock is very high right now...what does he have, like 140 hits already? He's a playmaker, he's solid both ways, and IMO undervalued contract-wise. Any team should be proud to have him, I know I would.
Bonehead trade if you ask me. I like to think that the Braves are better than that.
