I was told that I can only buy fish from one pet store for my tank, and if I mix fish from other stores, one group of fish would get ick. Is this true, or does the store only want me to shop there?

no its not true. Probably the pet store told you this? to keep you coming back?

I have many fish in a tank from different stores and they have never had a problem in a healthy seasoned tank.

That is a complete lie ick is caused from a parasite and is passed from fish to fish ONLY depending on if the fish from the other store ALREADY have ick. That is a load of bs designed to fool you. LEAVE THAT STUPID PET STORE and never come back. Or if the fish are really good quality take it up with the management

Of course you can buy fish from different stores. The problem is that you are going to get conflicting advice, just like you will on this forum. Your fish will get ich from high ammonia and nitrite levels. Of course they want your repeat business, but I wouldn't listen to that person any more. Don't hold a shop responsible for something one employee said. The next time you want decent advice when you are in a store, ask the manager. They may not know everything, but they usually know enough to help you. If it was the manager that told you that about ich, I would find a new store.

I have ten aquariums and I am very fussy as to where I purchase fish! I never buy from the discount chains! And I would not mix fish from different stores! If you have an isolation tank where you can place the new fish for three weeks then go ahead! My favorite place to purchase fish...Animal House!! Rick, the ultimate aquarist, you rock man and I love you!

There is no reason you can't mix fish from other stores in a tank. The store is feeding you a line of bull to keep you shopping there.

No, your store is lying. You do want to quarantee any new fish, whether it's from the same store or a new store, to prevent ick, in a smaller spare tank. But, you can get your fish from wherever you want.

That is completely false. Whatever store told you that, don't ever buy from them again. But first, go back and let them know you will never buy from them again and why.

Wow, it's been a long time since I have heard such BS from a store. That's nothing but them trying to get you to stay out of other stores. I wonder why they don't want you to see other stores? Maybe price, selection or quality? I personally would take my business elsewhere.

it is somewhat true. you need to find out if the treatment of the fish ((ie: conditioning used in the water, food fed, etc)) is the same. and you cannot mix freshwater fish with saltwater fish because they need to be in seperate waters. hence the names.
