..."The Gumball Rally" was supposed to expound upon, reflect, and even exaggerate upon the covert, irreverent, wild and comically eccentric outlaw cross-continental auto race, from the east coast to the west coast, which reportedly actually takes place every few years or so.

Burt Reynold's film, "The Cannonball Run" (1981), and David Carridine's film, "Cannonball" (1976) cover the exact same cinematic territory, and in fact, borrow the actual race's 'Cannonball' name.

...these, plus the films, "Cannonball Run II" and "Speed Zone", both of which also parady the real-life underground auto race, are just rollackingly moronic good fun, where one merely has to sit back, turn off the brain, and enjoy!!!

the studio wanted to do a third Cannonball Run without paying a licensing fee to the original authors/writers
