for military adventures abroad, and for the suppression of civil liberties at home. It serves the same purpose, serving to create hysteria.
Behind the deceptive words designed to entice people into supporting violence -- words like democracy, freedom, self-defense, national security -- there is the reality of enormous wealth in the hands of a few, while billions of people in the world are hungry, sick, homeless. With the indiscriminate nature of modern military technology (no such thing as a "smart bomb," it turns out) all wars are wars against civilians, and are therefore inherently immoral. This is true even when a war is considered "just," because it is fought against a tyrant, against an aggressor, to correct a stolen boundary.

Do you think our country would be doing better by our people, principles of democracy & our proud history of the constitution if we would behave by example within our country and by diplomatic means outside our borders?

Oldvet... What problems did military force solve in Viet Nam? what problems did military force at Kent State during the Nixon administration solve? What problems did military force solve in the hundreds of invasions our country has been involved with over the last 2 centuries? Sorry buddy, but you're wrong. It's about imperialism and enslaving a lot of people in the world to a system they have had no choice in choosing.

EX LAX will clear up your problems.
Military, raw force, has solved more problems then any other force in history. Bleed your heart out, but it is true. Ask any country that has been in one.
Idealism is a waste of time.
No such thing as a smart bomb. Grow up.
Problems solved in Viet Nam? Ask Ho Chi Minh. He will testify that he gained a country out of it.
Kent State. Protests sort of tapered off. A few lives given for many more saved, when the indignant country helped force the end of the war.
Sorry, I am not wrong. History backs me up. To extract a few incidents over the period of history proves nothing.
What is your answer if you are so right. Do we roll over and say okay kill me and my family rather then defend ourselves. Come back 20 years from now, when you have gained a mature outlook and look at your silly question. Actually it is not a new question. We heard it 100's of time in the 70's.

There is no such thing, never has been, and never will be, as a "just" war. It's hard to put the two words in the same sentence. The powered elite will try to use fear as has been done for centuries just as the church has exampled to create a hysteria, (as you said), to control the proletariat. Another conservative mindset is the "elevation" of military ideology to further support an aggressive populace focused on a real or imaginary enemy consolidating the mentality of hate in a channeled direction. These madmen will stop at nothing to achieve their agendas including the use of propaganda, twisted morals, and their greatest emotional weapon of religion. They'll spend trillions on a negative motive and put their country in debt to pursue a war but won't spend anything on positive concepts such as healthcare and education. The insurance companies have bought their loyalties and they fear an educated society who asks questions.

Yep, you got right, with an enemy they will allways invent one.

US Government "misplaces" $3.3 trillion
Beyond Enron and WorldCom lies a much bigger scandal: the "misplacement" of over $3 trillion of taxpayers' money by the US government. This story hasn’t gone completely unreported. For example, CBS News quoted Donald Rumsfeld as saying, "according to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions."

According to Catherine Austin Fitts, former Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), "total undocumented accounting adjustments [...] for the Department of Defense [and HUD for fiscal 1998-2000] amount to a whopping $3.3 trillion, or $11,700 for every American." More >

I know that authoritarians take every excuse to try to curtail your rights, that coporations take every opportunity to make a sale, and that the military, like every governemnt agency, is always looking for reasons to justify it's existance (and budget).

BUT, that does not mean those excuses, opportunities, and reasons are entirely invalid.

Communism was real. It was a threat. It was, in fact, a real threat. It's still not exactly deceased or inconsequencial, either.

Terrorism is real. It is a threat. It is, in fact, a real threat. That means we should try to do something about it. And, even though we do need to do something about it, that doesn't mean we should give up treasured rights for false assurances of safety, nor engage in ill-considered military campaigns for thier own sake.

But, simply pretending that a problem doesn't exist because you don't like some of the solutions proposed by cynical opportunists is just foolish.

No, I do not think our country would be doing much better if we had taken your peacnik aproach, I think we would have been conquered, probably in 1812, if there had ever been a revolution, that is.
