I assume you are talking about one of those little 4 foot tall tanks sitting just outside your fireplace chimney and I further assume it is dedicated to just the fireplace. If the capacity of the grill tank is enough to run the fireplace for a couple of times then do it. Me personally, If I could get the (grill) tank to connect to the gas line securely I would do it in a heart beat but I dont know where you live and there may be some sort of neighborhood code that will prevent this. If you call the gas company and ask them about this they will give you a thousand reasons why you cant do it but that is because they want you to pay for their tanks

They are easily found at any home improvment store or hardware store. Also at Target, Walmart, Kmart, Eckerds, Wallgreens, and some larger grocery chains.
