Call up all active duty, reserve military personnel from all branches of service that are available and head to Iraq. Use the Iraqi Army and the U.S. military to secure the entire border allowing nothing to come in or go out. Use the Army \ Marines to search building to building confiscating all weapons and capturing/killing all insurgents/resistors with the Iraqi police taking over once cities are cleared. Once all the guns are out of the hands of those who would use them to hamper Democracy, and the Iraqi police are secured in every town, the military leaves and political advisors come to help secure the government. Secritarian violence would be limited as they would have no weapons to use. After a few months, the U.S. would only have to have a limited presence and the Iraqi's could be left to run there own country.
Probably a stupid idea. Oh well.

Disarming a populace is /very/ difficult, especially one that's not only hateful and distrustful towards you, but towards itself. The Shiite won't just hide his weapons from you because he's afraid he'll need to defend himself from you, but also because he's terrified of being unarmed if his Sunni neighbors still have guns...

1) We don't have enough troops to fully occupy Iraq. If you're a soldier serving, you already must KNOW this.
2) Army and Marine detachments had already SEARCHED buildings and consficasted weapons left and right, remember?
DIDN'T WORK.
They got replacements.
3) The Iraqi police is a joke. It is infiltrated by both the enemy, and rife with corruption. There's not enough of them to hold every town or city anyway. Just like the poorly trained and ill-equipped Iraqi security forces.
4) How does having a weapon in order to protect yourself--HAMPER democracy?
5) You think having no weapons would stymie sectarian violence? GUESS AGAIN. Long before there were guns, they had bows, arrows, rocks, and anything else which could be used as a *weapon*.
How are you going to address that problem?
6) Still, the same fantasy ideal that if only the US had limited presence, the Iraqis would be left to run their country.
Problem is, is that Iraqis AREN'T interested in running their own country, or want democracy for that matter. The Shiite majority which Iran backs--wants nothing more than personal control over their territories, a strong power base and Shia law ruling over the land.
We basically screwed the pooch on this failed war--when we invaded on the pretext of lies and distorted intelligence.

Remove the rules of engagements on our troops, stop political correctness from hampering our war efforts, bomb the Mosques and the Sunni Triangle. Then secure the entire border and search any left over buildings that weren't bombed to confiscate any weapons. Keep only a limited U.S. troop presence to supervise reconstruction from there. Station them on the borders.

Well, that would be a temporary band-aid. It would temp. stop the violence. As soon as we leave the borders would flood the country with weapons and violence with more severity than before.
The best bet is to remove all military (some say havoc will ensue.....what do we have now?) And let them handle their own country. We need to stop butting in other countries and improve our foreign relations asap.

If only we could take the gloves off and let our troops fight the way they were trained to! What a wonderful thought...there would be an end to this all so much sooner!

I asked a similar question a few days ago. The consensus of opinion was it can't be won. We have already lost. I'm glad our fathers and grandfathers had more grit and guts.
