Nope, they come from a variety of habitats including rice paddies, streams, ponds and swamps. Here's a photo of an actual Betta splendens habitat:

No.

Betta fish aka Siamese Fighting Fish are from Thailand and are only native to that country.

They live in small bodies of water like rice paddies.

They only have short fins in the wild. The long finned varieties are specially bred.

Absolutely not. They come from humongous rice paddy fields in Thailand where they have plenty of room to swim, which dispels rumours that they are happier in small amounts of water; and where they are able to travel from one field to another with ease, which dispels rumours that they can live in dirty water.

They are called Siamese Fighting Fish, not Japanese Fighting Fish as many seem to believe.

Ask yourself...could anything actually live in the contaminated waste of a sewer? Maybe diseases.

Fish are sometimes hard enough to keep healthy in tanks that only they mess in...

no, they are from thailand not japan.

Also from the rice paddies not sewers.

Now other species are found in different areas, i believe their might be only one species that is native to japan, but the most common, betta splendens lives in thailand.
