Because they want to be different from the rest of the world, so they mess us up, they want to be so different and independent they even use miles and stuff instead of kilometers, sorry got carried away

because when first time American football were made they don't know what to call the game. and at that time football(soccer) was the most popular sport in the world till now. so they decided to use the word football for the game that American people made and change football to soccer. even English people use the word soccer sometimes

I am often surprised at the silly anti-American invective that often shows-up in the answers proffered to this question. We often adopt foreign words for things and have none of the chauvinism described here against this practice. We cannot change the name of soccer to football because in American dialect - for reasons that have more to do with happenstance then conspiracy - that word is already used for a different sport. It's as simple as that.

The fact that people are blaming Americans for coining the term Soccer.....We took it from the BRITISH...lol
It was a slang for the original name of the sport: Association Football.
The reason we use soccer is because of NFL Football....but we are not the only country......There is also Aussie rules football.....

well it started w/ soccers real name which is association football. and what americans did was they took soc in asSOCiation and they added a CER to make it SOCCER. so they just used that for short whereas the english decided to drop the association in association football to just make it football.
so that is how they came up w/ the 2 different names

Because there's another type of Football in there, so they including me call American football...Football. And Football...is soccer.
American Football is very famous, it's like cricket in Britain lol.
