I would say Madonna. I remember her "Like a Virgin" video playing endlessly on MTV. Everyone literally overnight, started dressing like her. She was definitely the "it" girl in the 80's for me & my friends. I was in college then & you couldn't go anywhere without hearing her music playing everywhere.

You cannot put an R&B pop star like Janet Jackson and 2 rockers like Pat Benatar and Cyndi Lauper in the same category.I am not much into female rock but you left out one of the best female bands of all time from the 80's and their name was Heart.
