People lie to get what they want. If telling the truth is perceived as not getting what is wanted or need, a good lie will go a long way.

Some people have been hurt by telling the truth. They quickly develop a reason to lie.

Some people just enjoy toying with those who are gullible.

Some people like to test the limits of others.

Some do it for attention.

Some do it because the truth may be embarrassing or lead to other unfortunate consequences.

Rest assured, I'm gonna lie. If a hit man comes my way looking for you, I'm gonna lie to him about where you are.

its human nature. If you look around you see that we humans are most selfish beings. I speak only for myself. I know i lied when I was a kid . As i grow mature I realized that even i lie the truth will come eventually, and i'll face the consequences. We grow our lies become more sofisticated, why because we have choice either tell the truth which is not convinient or lie like everyone else just to stay in comfy zone.

bottom line most people lie because its very convinient for them, regardless of the consequences. You have to be really mature person to tell the truth.

They lie for many reasons. Some kind, some cruel, some from fear. "Do you like my new hair do? Want to visit my mom this weekend?" Kind. "You can't do anything right. I hate you. I am sorry I ever married you." Cruel "I am not the one that broke the lamp. I turned in the paper." The lies are a learned response. White lies are easily forgiven. The black lie is not. "I would never cheat on you."

Seeing this is a philosphy thread, i'll give a philosophic answer:

Human nature changes, therefore it is useless studying it, because you can't. Being the neo-platonist, I think that we should study what never changes - ultimately metaphysics. If we understand whats behind the things that always fluctuate, then we can understand human nature a little bit more.

People lie to protect themselves.
The reaction to an action sounds like something I learned in psychology class.
You learn from the reaction whether it is good or bad.
All life long we learn from all the stuff you talk about in your question.
So as you get experience in life you learn about those who deceive, protect yourself from them, count it as experience, and go on with your life.

Never mind the unhealthy behaviors of others. We can only change and nurture our own characters. Pay attention only to your own character development. And, assume for the sake of hope that all people are in their own private struggles to rise above themselves and their faults and weaknesses in pursuit of some personal vision of goodness and honor. And, be tolerant because every one of us is at a difference place in that learning curve, some far behind, some far ahead. Help those who try to rise above themselves. Avoid those who are not.

An adrenaline high and for adrenaline junkies (who are just as addicted to their own adrenaline as many people are to tobacco), they have to keep reaching for the next risk in order to get a "fix."
