i'm buying a laptop, i've got too exactly the same except for one is about 6/1 lbs and a little cheaper, and the other is like 4.9 lbs and a little bit more expensive.

I will be walking around with my laptop in my backpack cuz i'm a college student. I'm a normal strength girl, i just don't know if it will bother my back.

I think 4.9 lbs is preferable to 6.1 lbs, but neither of those is terribly heavy. I don't think I'd want to carry anything heavier than I have to though. I just bought a laptop and I think it's probably about 6 lbs, and it doesn't seem very heavy. If you already have both laptops, just try carrying both and see which one you need. Most of my classmates don't carry many books with them, so the weight of a laptop is not critical. One salesman I spoke to tried to convince me that 7 lbs is not heavy for a laptop, but I don't agree with that. It definitely is not light for something you want to carry around all day. Any laptop much heavier than the one I bought would make me want to leave it at home as much as possible.

One guy I know used to have laptops that were about the weight of a book . . . those were nice. They were Sony Vaio laptops. They're too expensive for my taste though. One with fairly good specs costs about $2500. Most recently he bought a Mac computer . . . it's slightly heavier than my laptop and he was complaining because he was used to his little laptops.

Good night!

Now that's a good question and the answer, of course, is whatever you are comfortable carrying. I'm not trying to be a smart *** about it but that's the best answer I can give you. What is too heavy for you might be perfect for someone else.

I manage a network for a living and a few years back everyone who traveled and had a laptop complained that their 6 and a half pound notebooks were way too heavy to lug around the airport when they traveled. I ended up buying them all the little 4 pound Dell Latitudes.

They were all happy for a while but after a couple of years they all got tired of the external CD ROM drive and small 12" LCD. Today most of my laptop users have opted for the slightly heavier 6+ pound system with built in CD ROM drive. The added extra weight doesn't seem to bother them. I even have a couple engineers who carry the big 17" wide screen systems around and that doesn't seem to bother them. Those systems weigh over 8 pounds but they are willing to lug the extra weight so that they can enjoy the larger display.

Try putting a few books weighing about the same as the laptop in your backpack. That will give you an idea of how comfortable it will be for you to carry the system around,

Good Luck,

You won't really notice the difference between a 6 pound or 5 pound laptop. You might also check out if the media drive can be removed, which would reduce the weight of the heavier unit. I suspect your books and other stuff might be heavier, so you might carefully what you really need to carry around with you. The display on the slightly heavier unit might be larger and that might matter as much to you as the weight difference. You might even consider refurbished, as they often meet the needs of college students and can be much less expensive.
