Based upon the governmental control index line, there are two levels of government extreams. On the extream right there is no government; it's called anarchy. On the extream left there is government control of everything; it's called total government. The line looks like this:
{No government ( anarchy ) --------------------Total Government}
The American Republic was formed to be in the middle with limited government, but with laws to protect the same. A conservative believes in that ideal. A Nazi, socialist, Fascists, communist and those that like more government control favor the left side of the scale, Having said that, it is odd that so many people on the left refer to conservatives as Neo cons, Nazis or Fasists. Hope this helps.

Total Government falls into Fascism, Communism, Totalitarianism. Any ism where a few people get to tell what everyone can say, do, think, eat, drink, drive, marry. In essence, you need government permission to do just about anything.

Anarchy is the total lack of government. It is a lack of any agreed upon laws that help the society function as a group, with a common interest. Anarchy breaks society down to where there is no such thing a crime, because there is no law to define it, or an agreement to enforce it. If your neighbor happens to like that new car of yours in the drivesway, he can take it. Now what are you going to do? no police to call to have your neighbor arrested. Do you shoot him for stealing your car? fine, now you won;t be arrested either, again, for the same reason. Now your neighbor's son has sworn a blood vengeance, and kills you and your wife (just because...). can you say Hatfield and McCoy? sigh.

Neither case is good for a society. That is why the United States was formed as a Constitutional Republic. To preserve individual rights but to maintain a sense of law (notice, I did not say democracy, that is another topic)

I usually think of it in terms of Authoritarian vs Libertarian, but, yes, Anarchy is the extreme end of the scale, with the level of Totalitarianism you only see in fiction like '1984' at the other extreme.

Many conservatives and liberals are Authoritarian in thier outlook. Fascists and Communists (respectively) being the standard examples. On the other extreme, many Anarchists also have leftist leanings, while Libertarians are arguably more ideaologically on the right (it varies, actually).

Yes, I know the difference. And yes, neoconservatives have, over the past several years, become huge fans of big government, moving them much farther to the right on your spectrum. Hence, it's not really that odd the people refer to them in this way. Hope that helps.

the problem with anarchy is as soon as they rebuild what they tore down , to stick to the the plan of anarchy , they have to tear down what they built the day before there for nothing ever gets done( and in the case of government that can be a good thing
