People have been predicting the end of the world since the beginning of time. It might happen on December 23, 2012, it might happen in 2525, 5510, or maybe even a million years from now. No one knows.

People LOVE to imagine that the world is going to end. That seems counterintuitive, I realize, but it explains the mad craze for "End of Days" books and movies, etc. We all have our secret infatuation with the macabre.
There have been a TON of self-described messiahs and sinister ministers just in the last 100 years. Jim Jones, David Koresh, Heaven's Gate, et al. made predictions about the end of the world that obviously never came true. I remember one about 15 years ago that SWORE that the world was going to end in March of 1992, but of course, here we all are still. Nostradamus predicted that the world would end in May 1998. I guess even 16th century apothecaries get it wrong sometimes.
If the world IS going to end in 2012, is it going to end at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2012? Is that midnight Eastern Time? Pacific? Zulu time?
All I'm saying is, don't plan for the end of the world. There's nothing you can do about it anyway, even if it IS going to happen. Just keep on doing what you do, whatever that is.
The world will still be here tomorrow when you wake up. I guarantee it, just as it will be here on January 1, 2013. Promise.

The dates you cite are related to the prognostications of one person - Nostradamus.
The article listed below debunks his activities, and explains how he most probably picked 2012.
The humor is that he was correct in his observations, just went out of his way to make his findings seem more dramatic than should be they. The sadness is the whole idea of enabling his drama is being used to mask what is really going to happen from as many as possible.

What do I think about 2012?? It comes between 2011 and 2013. That's about all the significance there is.

Yeah, well, it's about he polar tilt. Just as Atlantis sunk from it, it will rise again in a devastating shift of the poles which may seem like the world is ending, but it is not.

I CANNOT WORRY ABOUT 2012.
I AM MUCH TO CONCERNED ABOUT NOVEMBER OF 2008.
The world as we know it will probably be destroyed if either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama get into office as President of the USA.

Nothing special will happen. The Mayans could not predict the future.
