Privacy is very important to me. I would only want to live in a commune if there were opportunities to be by myself on a regular basis. On the other hand I have never tried communal living and there may be advantages to it that I don't have living on my own. I like being around people; so it might be nice to have company. There again; if there was friction in the commune or someone I didn't like, it could be misery. On balance therefore; I think not.

If the commune is what I like and the way I would want to live.
I am a naturist and personal privacy is nothing. Financial privacy would not be an issue in a commune now would it? So that leaves minor stuff and that all can be no big deal to work with.
Essentially we are all the same so why worry about hiding things from each other?

Privacy is essential for me. Not because I'm intolerant of the habits or opinions of others, or anti-social, but because my nature requires a measure of solitude & space to balance the necessary "outer society" activities in my life. I enjoy silence from urban "noise," people's voices--to hear the birds, wind in the trees, wind chimes. I share my home with friends only by mutual agreement. No, without having ever done so, I know I would never be "happy" in a commune.

As per the scriptures, three things require privacy, namely prayers, sexual acts and eating food. The third, of course, may at times be exempted.
Prayers is a one to one bonding with the Ultimate, so does not require elaboration.
Sexual acts are strictly between two individuals, taking good care not to disrespect the elders and influence the children before they come of age.
Eating as such also requires privacy. The richness and poverty of diet intake can not be advertised. It also denotes the precautions that are taken by people who are on special diet owing to various diseases. Once-in-a-way social eating is allowed.
Living in a commune is a pleasure as long as values are upheld. The rebellion in human nature and not falling in line to tow the values has lead to the disintegration of the commune system, the joint family system and now the nuclear family is also under attack.

I could NOT live a commune. Dorm life is bad enough as it is. There are some times in a person's life when they just need to be alone. I for one am the sort of person that needs those moments. That's when I gather my thoughts and ponder on the harder decisions that I'm going to have to face. So, no, communal living is just not the way to live.

it depends on many things ...mostly the level of comfort in the commune with the others living there ...and is sex open to all or can you chose a steady favorite that is an exclusive for both of you .... when the lights are out you can play and all can be cool .... so there are lots of things that can contribute to this .... Privacy is a very personal thing ....

Privacy is of paramount importance to me; a commune is completely out of the question. I think I had enough of my parents/bosses/Army telling me what to do, I don't need anyone else telling me what to do. I like to be alone; I like to do things on my own. I can't stand being around any one who smokes, drinks, does drugs (which is most people, in or out of a commune). I like having it quiet. I enjoy tending plants and animals. I like being out doors, challenging the elements. (I have hiked across glaciers, whitewater rafted; built my own log cabin; slept outside at 30 below zero, and worked in the sun at more than 120 degrees.)
So, definitely no commune!

I could easily live in a commune. You only need privacy if you're self conscious of your body ;)

Totally important, I don't like nousy people....... I prefer to work in an alone environment as possible. But when it comes to communication I am totally open, don't misunderstand me, just don't bug me when I am concentrated in a project. I don't like to waist my time, or get interrupted with stupid things.
