Piranhas are not illegal in the US, they are illegal in many states, however. These fish are for expert fish keepers only, and if you have to go to yahoo answers to learn about fish care then you are not ready for piranhas. If you want fish that eat other fish, try the needle fish. You could keep them in a 55 gallon, and get your rocks off feeding them guppies.

Maintaining Piranha is not a task for anyone that would ask that question. They are only illegal in some states,so start your research by looking up the laws in your locale. They require schooling size groups and if the aquarium is not large enough they begin to eat on one-another. Feeding them can get expensive and demanding. In the wild they live mostly on the fins of the other fish around them, and only resort to eating whole fish when trapped in the backwater "Lagos" of the Amazon.
If you are determined to keep the little buggers you have a lot of research to do before setting up a tank and cycling it.

Piranhas (freshwater fish) get more than a foot long and need to be kept in large groups in a large, shady tank. For a group of Piranhas (5+), you would need a tank of about 100 gallons. They need warm water, a well planted tank, and a lot of floating plants to be secure. In many states, they are illegal because they have been put into river systems by poor owners.

Piranhas like to be in large schools. For one piranha, you can keep it in a 30-50 gal tank. They tend to eat a lot and can be very costly if you continue to feed it feeder fish. Instead feed it beef heart and its cheap. Check local grocery store meat section. No salt water required for piranhas.

ok you sounds like a little kid who wants a piranha for all of the wrong reasons.
if your asking if they are saltwater, then you dont know anything about red bellies and need to do more research.
They are relly boring, trust me, your going to get one so you can show off and feed it live foods. that get dull.
It isnt advised to get one for a person who is immature as you can hurt yourself, the fish, or someone else.
Piranahans need over 100 gallons.
