Add another layer of sheetrock to the existing wall...it really will provide a deadening effect for the sound waves..
good luck

The Sound Transmission Coefficient (STC) for a normal stud wall is about 28. The wall between your apartments is probably fire-rated in some way so already has a higher STC. To make loud speech barely audible as a murmur you would have to increase the STC to between 42 and 48.
Reducing sound transmission requires that you increase the mass of the wall and carefully seal any air leaks through the wall.
Since you have an existing building, a good way to increase the STC would be to install an additional layer of drywall each side of the wall between your apartments.
Both of you would have to remove any base and crown molding on the walls between your units. Screw resiliant metal channels horizontally 24" o.c.. To these screw drywall (1/2", although 5/8" is better). This construction serves to reduce the through-the-wall sound vibrations. Be sure to seal the joint where the drywall meets the walls and ceiling. After the drywall is finished, reinstall the base and crown.
If you are careful doing this, you should achieve an STC in the mid-40's or higher.

Inviteyour neighbour to join you, maybe that's what he wants after all ! or better, tell him to pay your rent. You should talk to this guy, he must have a real life issues. The appartments these days are not soundproof ( built fast and cheep to satisfy the demand) and you can't just stop having sex because MR neighbor complains. It's your right to have sex when you feel like; it's part of your private life and ahuman right as well . Last but not least, for your own compfort , try a floor bed with large drawers underneath where you can store your clothes or blankets, it absorbes the vibrations and is also very stable. Cheers

Would it not be simpler to trade rooms with the kids.
After all you could simply have your TV turned up or wear ear plugs. If your neighbor doesn*t want anyone to hear let him pay for any soundproofing; I also agree with the person who said he may be running an illegal business out of his aparment. I would ask the landlord; Or read your lease agreement, it should say if you can run a business there.
I would assume all lease agreements are the same.

You'll need to make layers somehow. Without ripping the sheetrock off the walls and seriously insulating the walls for sound, you could try to put something over it. If you're greatly concerned you can actually build another wall right up against the one in need of insulating and pack it with the appropriate sound blocking material.

You need to talk to the manager or apartment owner because soundproofing is a permanent change. Walls, floors, ceiling, air vents.......good luck. If he's running a business out of his apartment it might be illegal....he needs an office, LOL!

Actually, a relatively inexpensive way of sound-proofing is to gather used futon mattresses (air them out for about a week in your garage first) and attach them to the walls. Or a less effective way of sound-proofing is to attach batting (the innerds of quilts) to the walls.
And I would suggest whatever you decide to do - do it on both sides of the wall - yours and your neighbor's.

What he is doing or planning on doing from his apartment is illegal. Maybe you should re-consider moving in esp. if you dont want your kids subjected to that.
