Hi,

Factor x² = 7x + 12 = 0
(x - 4)(x - 3) = 0 <== factored form
x - 4 = 0
x = 4 <== answer

x - 3 = 0
x = 3 <== answer

Using the quadratic equation where a = 1, b = -7, and c = 12:
.........._______
-b ± √(b² - 4ac)
--------------------- = x
.........2a

..............____________
-(-7) ± √((-7)² - 4(1)(12))
--------------------------------- = x
.........2(1)

........._______
7 ± √(49 - 48)
------------------- = x
.........2

........._
7 ± √1
--------- = x
.....2

7 ± 1
-------- = x
....2

(7 + 1)/2 = 4 <== answer

(7 - 1)/2 = 3 <== answer

I hope that helps!! :-)

You need to use the quadratic formula to solve that.

ax^2+bx+c represents your equation, ok? So "a" would be 1, "b" would be 7, and "c" would be 12.

Here's the formula (I have to type it out in words, sorry):

x equals

-b plus-or-minus the square root of b^2-4ac
Then you divide all of that by 2a

So yours would be
7 (plus-or-minus) Sq. Rt. of (49-48)
divided by
2

So X = (7 + the Square root of 1)/2
OR X = (7 - the Square root of 1)/2

I think I did that right. :D

x²-7x +12=0

The Quadratic Formula
x = {-(b) ±√[(b)² - 4(a)(c)]}/[2(a)]
Substituting
x = {-(-7) ±√[(-7)² - 4(1)(12)]}/[2(1)]
x = {7 ±√[49 - 48]}/2
x = {7 ±√[1]}/2

I think you can take it from here... the arithmetic is trivial... or you can wait for somebody to do it for you.

x = (-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a

let a = 1
let b = -7
let c = 12

Plugging in

(-(-7) +/- sqrt((-7)^2 - 4(1)(12))/2(1)
(7 +/- sqrt(49 - 48))/2
(7 +/- sqrt(1))/2
(7 +/ 1) /2

so
x = (7 + 1)/2 = 4
and
x = (7 - 1)/2 = 3

Therefore x = 3 and x = 4

x = [ 7 ± √(49 - 48) ] / 2
x = [ 7 ± 1 ] / 2
x = 4 , x = 3
ALSO by factorising:-
(x - 4) (x - 3) = 0
x = 4 , x = 3

What do you want to do with it? It does factor easily (x-3)(x-4)=0
