You're absolutely right. The problem is, you have to put yourself in their shoes. They're enjoying a high level of success and are in the public eye constantly. Some of them are young and they do not know how to handle the fame. A few of them may think they do not deserve it and turn to drugs to escape these feelings of inadequacy.
These people need drugs to feel motivated in a situation that may eat them apart at times. It may be time for a career change, but if you had fame and money, would YOU want to give it up without a fight? Drugs are just a part of this struggle.

I think it is the pressure of winning purposed by an owner or it could be an injury and the athlete has become addicted .It has been asked if you had choice of taking anabolic steroids to win a medal and the price is you have shortened your life by 10 years , would you do it? Sixty-five percent said yes. So another reason is the twisted priorities of winning over anything else.

money . focus is on money. people pay to see them as opposed to making the effort to become one themselves. athletes are commodities the importance of which has been exaggerated. as soon as the fan base erodes and sports return to something everyone does this might not matter so much. if the fans refused to watch or buy ticketts to see any game in any sport where athletes did drugs then they would stop, besides the ticketts are expensive anyway and add that players do drugs then all the more reason not to go to games. then again they might not but it is something to think about especially if say for example in football if steroids killed the watching of football games at stadiums.as in NFL. perhaps reject all sports merchandising if it continues.as in sports vidio games and the like. better things anyway

If you mean performance-enhancing, it is the case of individuals/governments seeking any kind of edge on the field of play. If you mean recreational drugs, it is - and always will be - pop culture.
