Throw everything away that is old, even slightly. Then take everything out and wash the inside with baking soda solution and rinse real well. Make sure you check under the vege drawers as stuff accumulates under there and not noticed. Then, keep an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator all the time, changing periodically. They even make boxes specific for the refrigerator; it opens from the front instead of the top.

Make sure to keep onions wrapped with plastic wrap and then put in a zip-lock bag. Some cheeses need to be wrapped securely, as well.

Empty it from top to bottom and scrub out with baking soda and water. Clean out the drain pan underneath and make sure the drain from the refrig cabinet to the drain pan isn't clogged. Scrub all the shelves and storage bins. Now check the food as it goes back in. Sometimes the cardboard containers get funky. Get several containers of baking soda and put one in the freezer and another in the frig. If you still have a stinky frig......could be the insulation inside is funky. there's no cure for that. If you are a renter, could be a previous owner allowed stuff to spoil and the smell got into the insulation. No cure. New frig.

Empty it out and clean it with a bleach solution thoroughly. Let it dry completely before putting any food back in it. This may sound kind of obvious but check once every 4 or 5 days for food that might be starting to go bad and keep a box of baking soda open and replace every now and then.

First go through and make certain that there is not something left that has spoiled; then clean it real well with soapy water and rinse. Insert an open box of Baking soda. Change the box every three months. This will help with the odor

I agree with the people who say clean out the refrigerator, throw away any questionable "science projects", and use baking soda.

But, don't forget to clean out the freezer if you have a combination unit. The surfaces on the freezer will hold odors, too.

Clean it from top to bottom - remove the food and scrub the shelves, drawers and walls with a vinegar/rubbing alcohol mix (1:1). This is also a good time to go through the food and toss out those things that have gone bad or expired.
