we just moved to our new house today I have a 55 gallon salt water tank and when we got to our new house the water was a gray color is it safe to put the fish back in the water the fish are in transport tanks and I dont think they can stay in there much longer

The gray color is probably from sediment. You should still do a full water test, but you will probably be fine. You didn't say how long your tank was not operating, so if it has been several days, then the water is probably not good.

The gray is probably due to mineral content if no one has lived in the house in some time. Try letting the water run for 3-5 minutes to see if it clears. Otherwise I wouldn't risk it. See if there's a SuperWalmart or Target store nearby and get some Culligan water (this is made by reverse osmosis, so it's pure). If the fish are in tanks, see if the filter can be hooked on over the rim until you get the new tank set up, and use as much of the water as they're in as possible. This will lessen the shock of possible new water chemistry.

Also, test your water regularly for a while - when I did a move a few years ago, the new water didn't have as much buffering capacity as what I had previously, and I had a real problem with the pH levels for a while. You don't want to lose any fish because there's a difference from what you or they are used to!
