the indigestion or gas may upset some but i think its more about the high sodium content which can make you retain even more water and swell up in like your feet and ankles or also the caffeine, pregnant women should limit or avoid caffeine

There are a couple of reasons. The sugar isn't very good for her. The second is that the carbonation is hard on the kidneys. This is not usually a problem for many healthy people. During pregnancy, your kidneys are under extra strain which can cause problems. Also, because of additional blood, your gums may bleed leaving you more open for a gum infection from bacteria growing in the sugar.
Most doctors will say that you can have one a day unless you have some other problem like gestational diabetes. The caffeine isn't a problem in that amount either.
I don't know why docs advise sprite or gingerale. Neither has ginger any longer. You actually have to go to a natural foods store to get gingerale with real ginger (which does help settle nausea). Alternatively, ginger tea works.

Too much caffeine (over 300mg a day) can cause respiratoy defects and other problems, but one Pepsi only has about 65mg of caffeine so it's not a problem to have one. The carbonation itself or even the sugar or calories will not hurt you or your baby. But I guess you could get indigestion because of the acidity or gas because of the bubbles, but it's not like it will do permanent damage...you just may need to eat some Tums afterward if it bothers you. Congrats on the new brother or sister!

different people react different to various foods.... when I was pregnant... I couldn't stand the smell of soda and chocolate without getting an upset stomach.. --normally... I never met a Pepsi or Hershey's bar that I didn't LOVE!
doctors say that the caffeine is bad for the baby... as long as she doesn't go crazy and drink a 6 pack a day... she shouldn't have a problem .

There is nothing wrong with enjoying carbonated beverages during pregnancy, especially carbonated juices or water. Lots of sodas have artificial sweeteners and caffeine, so read the labels carefully before you pick one. Also, you may notice that the carbonation causes you to feel very full and aggravates heartburn, especially during your third trimester.
Caffeine actually interferes with your body's ability to absorb calcium and iron. During pregnancy, these nutrients are absolutely essential to your fetus' growth. In fact, drinking caffeine during pregnancy can even, rarely, cause babies to be born with weak bones because of poor calcium absorption. Caffeine is also associated with low birth weight infants, prematurity and stillbirth. It also can lead to anemia (low iron), future osteoporosis and inflamed gums in both you and your baby-to-be.

It is not the carbonation, it is the caffeine. Caffeine is not good for baby. A little bit every now and then won't really hurt anything, but as a standard it is not good to drink everyday all day....

caffeine is Very bad for a fetus!!! it can cause alot of problems for a growing fetus... just research caffeine and pregnancy on google.
or check on this site:

even non-caffeine carbonated drinks should be limited to 2 a day b/c of empty calories... the baby needs to grow and pop doesn't give you anything.

I never heard that carbonated drinks are bad for pregnant women. I think it more about the caffine not the carbonation.

Mostly, you should just stay away from caffeine. However, she might not want to drink carbonated drinks b/c they can cause heartburn.

too much carbonation isn't good, it ages the placenta. also, caffeine isn't that great either (but some is fine).
