I just finished remodeling a house (practically rebuilt it). We went with wood in the foyer, living room and den; tile in the kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, and main hallway; and carpet in the bedrooms.

The flooring guy (a long-time frind of mine) and the contractor agreed on these choices. Hardwood is very popular right now. It's also easy to take care of (use a 3-foot-wide dust mop every week or so, then use a vacuum and floor mop every month or so). It can also be refinished (we got a 3/4-inch thick red oak plank) many times, which means it will last for decades.

But, you should consider avoiding hardwood in an area that is subject to moisture (kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room), because that is a hardwood floor's worst enemy next to gouging. Gouging is fairly easy to avoid. You just have to put felt pads on the bottom of anything that contacts the wood. And avoid sliding things across the wood to prevent scratches.

Carpet is nice for bedrooms. It's soft and warm on the feet on chilly mornings. It also absorbs sound, so you can get a good night's sleep. But, for general rooms in the house, a hardwood floor with a nice area rug is very stylish and versatile, and it will never go out of style.

Most people want wood flooring, but when they see the price difference then many stay with carpet

I have carpet and tile. No wood floors at all. I think it depends what part of the country you're in. I live in L.A. and my sister in Des Moines, and all her floors are wood.
