40 dolllars

let x be original price.

50% original price = x/2 = sales price
tax = 10% sales price = (0.1)(x/2) = x/20

22 = x/2 + x/20
22 = 10x/20 + x/20
22 = 11x/20
440 = 11x
x = 40.

It was $40. On sale for $20. 10% tax is a final of $22.

Sorry but first answerer is wrong!

Let x be the original cost.

(x/2)*(1.10) = 22, or

x = 44/1.10
x = 40.

So, she buys a 40$ table half-off, or $20. Ten percent of $20 is 2, so she pays $22.

Go with your gut, then check the answer.

Check the other answerer's answer, and you will see it does not check out.

22/1.1 = $20 = cost before 10% tax
So cost before 50% sale was 2*20= $40.

X= $20.00 Sale Price

$20.00 = 0.5 Y
Y = $20.00/0.5
Y = $40.00 Original Price
