You can do pretty much what ever you want with them. They are non toxic. If you decide to glue them, use a silicon sealant that is aquarium safe. You should cut them in lenghts of 8-14". The female should be able to hide from the male and have room to take off if he decides to take a peek. I would recommend 4 or 5.

They need to be wide enough so the fish can fit, but not so wide that it feels insecure. If your fish is 5 inches long and an inch wide, get a pipe that is about 2 inches in diameter. Put about 2 for every lesser (not dominant) fish, they will chose which ones they like and you can remove the extras. Don't use plumber glue, it is toxic. Good luck!

Since you seem to be a cichlid fan, you should provide a "cave" for every fish (or mated pair). Just cut them so they will fit into the tank and file any rough edges.

Rather than gluing them, put a few pieces of gravel beside them so they don't roll, and you can stack them as high as your water level will allow. Get the pipe in diameters just large enough to fit the fish with a little clearance.

PVC pipes are what plumbers use for water pipes, etc. They are made of hard plastic. They can be used for rabbit-proofing your home, as pet toys + as you said for using in fish tanks. : ) And they've also been used to house electrical cords underground (for ponds), underground cable wires, . . . .
For you fish tank you can have more than one curved one to make a U shape for them or just about any kind of design.
Link below with pictures + more of an explanation of what they are, used for, . . . . . It even shows what else you can create with it !!
