i'm not yet good enough to pass my driving test but reckon i'm probably better than a lot of the drivers currently driving. I don't think they need to make the current test more difficult, i think they need to retrain some of the older drivers, that would make the roads safer

Far too easy. People are not yet drivers just because they pass the test, they are merely vehicle operators. That doesn't mean all driving instructors turn out ill-trained drones by the way. You may very well train well past the requirements of the driver test. Many instructors do, but most places do not require formal driver training for new drivers. When I learned, my father would not let me go for the road test until I had experience from the parking lot to the street, across bridges, in heavy traffic, on the highway, on pavement and gravel, in good weather, rain, fog, snow, ice, pretty much everything that could happen in 6 months of learning. No driver test encompasses all that, but actual driving does. I have instructed people myself, and exposed them to far more than the test would cover as well. My own road test of any person I taught, or any person that wanted another opinion before they went for the official road test, was over an hour.

Judging by the poor driving standards you see on British roads today, it's way to easy. Too many people believe a driving licence is a right, rather than a privilege.
I trained as a driving instructor, but gave it up very quickly, because I was horrified at how little you actually have to teach new drivers to pass their test. And yet, instructors still seem to recommend something like 50 or 50 hours of lessons! Most people my age (mid 40's) passed their test with less than 20 hours tuition.

Hello
The Irish driving test used to depend on weather the guy testing you, liked you!. But seriously Most people pass on the second test in Ireland. It is as "easy" to pass as it is to fail. its only half an hour long here in Ireland and only 15 Min's actually on the road and no motorway driving test.
However i think the real problem is after the test, sure someone can pass the test but does that make them a good driver a courteous driver? the driving attitude here is o your at the top of the Q i want to be there!! now how do I get there and it doesn't matter if its safe!.
Frank Spenser's best line:-
An Angry driver is a bad driver
A happy driver is a good driver!
Thanks

Not sure where you are from, but here in the US, I believe the test-s are way too easy. I am a truck driver and on the road daily. I think that most people lacks the fundementals of traffic rules. I could go on and on, but I am sure that wouldn't change anything. So for as far I concern, raise the age limit to 18, lower the legal limit for intoxication to .05 and stiffen the penalties dramaticly. But that's just me.

Far too easy nowadays.
I could go on for ever but lets keep it short.
People learn and take tests in new cars which are easy to drive.
When subsequently faced with older vehicles they struggle with syncro's that dont work
Do you teach double de-clutching?
Could you drive a car home with a broken clutch cable????
Hand signals are not taught any more.... essential with electrics on some cars. French in mind here.
Driving on fast dual carriageways/motorways?
Towing on a rope?
Towing any trailer?
Parking regulations?
Local councils get the law wrong... What chance a learner????
As I said I could go on for ever and I've not mentioned the test yet.
Feel free to e-mail me !!

hi Mandy, i am 38 yrs old, i have been driving on the roads for 20 years & they failed me on the hazard perception!
T his part of the test is nonsense.
In my opinion, the computerised part of the test is FIXED!
Every time they fail someone on the hazard perception they get another £21.00 & how can we argue with a machine??
RIP OFF!
