My fiance' continues to lie to me about smoking. She tells me that she has quit and doesn't smoke anymore yet I know differently from reliable sources. If she can't tell me the truth about something simple like smoking, what else could she be afraid to tell me? What would you do in this situation?

Break off the engagement, lying IS a big deal, and cannot be tolerated.

If you can't tell she's smoking without hearing it from a "reliable" source then you're pretty damned gullible...It is quite easy to tell when someone smokes, their breath stinks, their hair and hands smell like cigarettes, their clothes smell like an ashtray. What would I do? I certainly wouldn't be hanging onto someone I didn't trust.

I guess my question is are you trying to force her to quit even though it seems she does not want to? Is your concern that she is lying to you or that she is not following your orders to quit? The reason I ask is because of your comment about knowing from reliable sources. Seriously, are you asking these people to report to you or are they just being good anti-smokers thinking its their duty to expose the smokers? Either way I'd be smoking my *** off out of rebellion myself. If you want her to be honest about her smoking habit you need to be supportive and understanding. Quiting is not easy under the best circumstances, almost impossible when all the people around you are stressing you about it. If you don't have the patience and understanding to wait till she is ready to quit then by all means move on if that is what would make you happy. If that is her worst habit she probally want have any problem finding a man that is willing to love her and be supportive when she is ready to quit.

My husband does this (about smoking) and we fight ALL the time...I tell him I can even smell the smoke...and if he would lie about something sooo stupid when I have proof in front of me, what else is he lying about? I flipped out and eventually he got to the point where he was cutting down AND telling the truth about it b/c he would rather deal with the evil eye and me pissed off b/c he smoked than the huge fight we got in everytime he lied.

A marriage based on lies will never work. Call off the wedding until she fesses up.

Catch her and then confide your fears. I guess you take things more seriously than she does.... Could this be at the crux of a relationship problem!!!!
