I was appalled by the new line of clothing Macys is carrying. With shirts that read “M” is for Mojado, Green is for Green Card, and my favorite I is for illegal. I’m Mexican American and I just can’t find the humor here! What’s next Macys? If your white your right T-shirts? S is for slavery? No race, no color, no hate! How about that one? I hope their not trying to insinuate that brown is better than white. And by the way who is going to be wearing this new line. Maybe a bunch of white guys! Yes that is just going to be so funny! I’m can’t believe Macy’s! Yes I’m pissed! Any one else?

Macy's is not the designer. The designer of those articles is Naco Clothing, a Mexico City-based clothing designer that has distinguished itself with sassy and irreverant slogans that turn upon racial and cultural stereotypes.

I first remember seeing t-shirts down here in Mexico City that said simply: NACO (which means poor or low-class, sort of the "white trash" equivalent of a Mexican). Then "Ser Naco es Chido" -- it's cool to be low class.

Because of the classism in Mexico, these slogans caused a big stir, and the company grew quickly and gained purchase among the urban hip -- especially the rich urban hip that liked to pretend their class status was personally unimportant.

Naco Clothing recently launched their clothing line in the US, and since race is a bit more sensitive than class in that country, they apparently have decided to shake things up on that frontier. I've seen B is for Beaner, for example, in addition to the ones you mention.

Personally, I found the initial efforts amusing, and a refreshing challenge to the fresa-naco class structure in Mexico. But I can see why it could be distasteful to some, especially when the subject matter revolves around questions of race or nationality.

Anyway, don't blame Macy's. They are simply taking a chance on some innovative, daring Mexican entrepreneurs that have questionable taste standards -- and have prospered because of it.

I heard they were pulling some of the shirts from their stores. Anyhow, it's atill offensive that they would carry things like that in the first place..I tried looking for the original article that said they would be pulling the shirts but this is all I could find.

Still, it's kinda too little too late.

Yeah its pretty crappy. I wouldn't wear anything like that, for sure. However, in tastefulness it doesn't really differ from shirts like "Free lotion pump here"---"Hold my {picture of squirrels and nuts} nuts". Most likely yes, only trashy people, black, white, or brown, will be wearing the items.
