Ok, I've had 3 kids and have heard and tried it all. Ultimately stretch marks come from your body growing faster than your skin is able to. It can be partly hereditary (i.e. the natural elasticity of your skin), or from just gaining weight too fast (which you can't always help, especially if you were small to start with, as I was). I've tried olive oil, and all it did was leave me with an oily mess every where I went. I found that using "Palmer's" cocoa butter lotion/cream (which can be found in any Wal-Mart, CVS, or Target) helped the most as well as vitamin e (which naturally makes the skin more supple). You can take vitamin e orally daily, AND it will help with breast tenderness, so you get double the benefits. Don't forget to use the lotion on your thighs, breasts, and hips as they can also develop stretch marks. Now the best thing I've found was a Vita-K lotion that I haven't been able to find since the first bottle I had several years ago (which sucks, because it worked better than anything else), so if you should happen to come across a bottle of that, it's a gold mine for stretch mark prevention. I hope this helps... Jules

I don't know if I agree with the "you can't prevent stretch marks" thing. I am VERY susceptible to them and have quite a few on my breasts and thighs from puberty. However, after rubbing lotion on my belly and hips for my first pregnancy, I did not get one. None yet with this second pregnancy yet either, and I'm 7 1/2 months. My advice is get a lotion meant for the purpose instead of olive oil which will just make a mess and ruin your clothes.

there is no real way to prevent stretch marks or get rid of them. While you are pregnant, use cocoa butter on the belly all the time. This helps to prevent and treat stretch marks. Also, don't over eat, just gain enough for you and the baby.

Gain weight slowly and steadily so that your skin can adjust. Use any type of moisturizing lotion. Do NOT scratch your itchy belly (rub it gently)!
Rapid and excessive weight gain is very damaging to the skin.
Some people are more prone to stretch marks than others.

I've got some olive oil body butter with vitamin E. It feels great, not as oily as oil. Vitamin E is the best thing for scars, so it's a really good thing to use. You could always pray. I don't think there's any way to prevent them, though.

I don't think that it would hurt to try it! After all it's only oil! I've heard that the more tone your tummy was when you got pregnant will lessen the chances for stretch marks- so hope you had a tone tummy and what the heck.... try the oil!

drink lots of water & use Palmer's cocoa butter cream for stretch marks. it has cocoa butter (obviously), vitamin E, collagen, shea butter, and something else... i hear it works the best & that's what i'm trying!! you usually can't prevent ALL stretch marks (if you're genetically susceptible you can't change that!) but you can reduce the severity.

one way to avoid stretch marks is to avoid gaining too much weight. I learned that the hard way.
