Goldfish don't live very long in a Bowl.
1. Not enough air surface in a bowl.
2. No filtration in a bowl.
3. They grow very fast and goldfish need at least 10 gals of water per fish.(goldfish grow to 6")!
4. Goldfish also need light.
Tank
1. You need a good filter.
2. You to have at least 10 to 20 gals of water per fish you plan on keeping. PS you can go to
Big Als Online for the Eclipse systems which I highly recommend. Check them out!
3. You need to have a big surface area for gas exchange.
4. You need to have a tank with a light. (on for at least 8 hours a day)
5. Make sure that the rocks are either big enough that the goldfish cant pick up or small enough that they cant get them stuck in there throat.
A comment on the size of the tank for Goldfish, I have a lot of people tell me that the goldfish can live in 5 gals for one goldfish. I personally dont think so. Goldfish are very dirty fish. Goldfish dont have a stomach and so they cant digest food like you or I it takes about 5 mins for there food to come out the other end. So when you think of this the waste is right there. So unless you plan on changing the water 10% of it every day. I suggest that you have a 10 gal tank for one goldfish. Fancy Goldfish also get big, they can grow to 6" so even if you buy a baby goldfish and put him/her in a 5 gal tank they will out grow it and not live the life they should. Goldfish also can live 10-20 years old. So I don't mean to sound mad but if you went to the pound and bought a kitten and expect the kitten to stay a kitten, then that's the same thing you are doing to a goldfish when you expect them to live in a bowl or a small tank or a tank with out a filter. Goldfish Get Big!

They require large tanks (50 gallons per Common, 20 gallons per Fancy) (Common Goldfish get 2 feet long and Fancy Goldfish get about 10 inches), enormously strong filters (they are horribly messy fish), and weekly maintenance. If you want an easy fish for a small container, go buy a Betta. By the way, a bowl is not an acceptable home for any fish. The average lifespan of a well cared for Goldfish is 15-20 years.

For your first fish DON"T get a goldfish. Even though goldfish are cute affectionate and a great friend they are much harder to take care of then most people realize. The pets stores usually don't tell you the info you need just what sells. For a first fish I suggest guppys.
Why?
1. Guppies are easy to take care of a 5 gallon tank some pretty gravel, a filter a light a gravel pump and your good to go.
2. Guppies are really compatible with tetras, mollies, platys and swordtails.
3. Guppies give you marine fish looks for a tropical fish or goldfish value
4. Guppies can skip a water change or a gravel clean Goldfish can't.
5. Guppies are hardy. Water Temp Changes, Light/No Light and rarely get sick. Goldfish can get sick and die with any of these things.
Guppies are a great way to get into the fish keeping hobby. After a year or two of guppy keeping you know the responsibility you've read up and your ready to move on to goldfish. then marine fish and soon it's an obession !

Ok first of all you should not keep your goldfish in the standard bowl that many people use for them...you should use a tank with a good filter.
The goldfish is usually classified as a coldwater fish, and it can live in an unheated aquarium. Like most carp, goldfish produce a large amount of waste both in their feces and through their gills, releasing harmful chemicals into the water. This also happens because goldfish, like other cyprinids, lack a stomach and only have an intestinal tract, and thus cannot digest an excess of proteins, unlike most tropical fish.
It's good to feed them fish flakes 2 times a day, or 1, depending on what kind of goldfish you have.
Like most fish, goldfish are opportunistic feeders. When an excess of food is offered, they will produce more waste and feces, partly due to incomplete digestion of protein. Overfed fish can sometimes be recognized by feces trailing from their cloaca. Goldfish need only be fed as much food as they can consume in one to two minutes, and no more than twice a day. Extreme overfeeding can be fatal, typically by bursting of the intestines.
They can live for years if you take good care of them!

A really strong filter. And once a week removing 20% of the water and topping it back off with room temp fresh water. Cleaning the gravel and glass is wise too. Just google "goldfish care". They live for 20+ years if you do it right. Cool fish.

For starters, at least a 30 gallon tank with filter, no heater needed unless you live in a cold area where the room temperature is below 75
And they are not dirty fish at all, as everybody says
Gravel for the bottom about 1 inch high
live plants like hornwort, cabomba, anarcris (these are coldwater plants)
a gravelsiphon, that you can do partial waterchanges of 25% weekly
a thermometer to check the temperature
check out this site, tells you everything you need to know

A lot less than tropical fish. Tropical fish require a heater in the aquarium to keep the water 78 degrees. Goldfish do not. They can live in a bowl. Still, an aquarium would be a little larger and nicer for the fish.

none. just feed every now and then and clean the tank when it becomes nasty.
i think it's rediculous people rate answers low for no apparent reason. gold fish do not need much care, and i told the truth in my answer so why are people rating it badly?
