The easiest way is to practice on swordtails. Look at this picture of swordtails. The females don't have the spike on the tail, and the females have a triangular anal fin. The anal fin is on the bottom, closest to the tail. Males have a "pointy" anal fin. Just look at the two and you will notice the difference.
