My mother told me that when she was expecting she still had spotting when she was going to get her period. I thought it completely stops when your pregnant?

You can menstruate and still be pregnant...

Menstruation usually stops when a woman is pregnant. However, in some cases, a woman might have a period with less blood or that lasts fewer days than usual and still be pregnant. Your confusion is understandable because these signs can lead women to believe they are not pregnant. However, various kinds of bleeding can occur in early pregnancy. Women can get some spotting in their first trimester:

* when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus;
* if the pregnancy is abnormal in any way [i.e., ectopic pregnancy (implantation outside of the uterus, such as in a fallopian tube), a threatening miscarriage]; or,
* from bleeding as part of their menstrual cycle (this is extremely rare).

not all the time when you get pregnant most women get implantation bleeding like a period but lighter and dont last as long and others can have a period all the way through i know some one who didnt know they were pregnant till 5 months because she kept gettin nose bleeds so she went to docs n found out then i know why you think this though i thought it at one stage too because usually a missed period is a sign of pregnancy but not all the time it can be other things too ! hope this helps

Some women will spot. Some women will bleed enough to think they're not pregnant. I've known a couple women who didn't know they were pregnant. One found out when she was almost due. She was a big woman so she didn't show. The other found out when she started showing.

Some women experience regular monthly bleeding. However, this is not a period, as menstruation DOES stop during pregnancy. Usually, the bleeding resembles spotting and is VERY light.
