If I go to see an NHL/NBA game or whatever, and I see seats in the front row that have been empty for like an hour, can I just go and sit down in them (if it's obvious that they won't be showing up)? Will anyone care?

I'm asking because I want to buy tickets, but since the arena is hardly ever full, I'm thinking of just getting cheap seats and then switching...

If you can get by the ushers you can. I'd only go if there was a large section empty, not just a seat or two here and there.
They don't give a crap in my local arena, but in NBA/NHL games I've been to the ushers are a pain and some of the ticket holders get snooty about it too.
I say if you can't sell the seats don't be a dick about people moving around.

You can until that ticket holder comes and calls for security. You can seriously be removed from the game if they see you too. Its just a good idea not to do so, especially if they announce a sold out game. Trust me, I know on a couple first hand experiences. Those NHL games are enforced tightly. Anyways, the seats at a hockey game are great nonetheless. The Energy Center where the Wild play is great! You can see the puck no matter where you sit!

Bless your heart, you're like me...always wondering what other people are thinking about your motivations and actions. I had to get to be 50 something before I stopped filtering every action through "what other people will think". I will NEVER get beyond wanting to avoid hurting the feelings of other people though, so now I would move to a more comfortable place, but I would dignify the person beside me by saying," no offense, but I think I'd have more room moving across the aisle." Do what's best and most comfortable for you, but respect the feelings of others. That's the way I will ALWAYS be. (Old Southern Lady and LIKE it that way...bless my heart).

To go to the lower areas of the arena they probably check youre tickets. I live in Florida. No one ever goes to Marlins games. Theres lots of empty seats. But to get to the exclusive levels they check your ticket.

At most stadiums and arenas they have guards checking tickets for the really supreme areas. You can move to some sections, but not the courtside ones.

It depends on the ushers, some are cool if you move down, others always want to see your ticket.

arena policy is probably that you can't but in all actuality it all depends on the arena staff. If someone is cool and its halfway thru the second period you could try. it's just weird if the person shows up though.

Sure you can - as long as you remember you can be asked to move. Some sections will screen you for your ticket - some won't. It doesn't hurt to try.

I think that's what my sister does.
She waits about for the first hour and sits in a better seat.

I don't know if anything will happen.
