What limits your existing CPU and would also limit a newer faster one is how fast your motherboard is. If you wanted to double the speed of your computer by putting in a new CPU that is twice as fast as your present one you are out of luck. THe new one will still run at the clock speed of your old motherboard and you have not made any gain.

Motherboards are often on sale for a few hundred dollars. If you are going to change the CPU you should get a new motherboard also.

If you really don't know much about that stuff, the alternative is to get a new computer that runs fast but is cheap because it lacks a lot of memory and peripherals. Keep the monitor, drives, memory, etc from your old one.

Go to www.majorgeeks.com. Download and run Everest Home Edition. It is free. It will give you the name of your motherboard and the model number. Go to the manufacturer's website and check what cpus will work in your board.

initially, Intel has made lots of categories P-4 processors you desire to understand precisely which style of P-4 you have and pass from there. in comparison to others who've spoke back your question, you additionally could make the errors of having the incorrect one and it will nevertheless pass interior the slot. the base line is you will desire to try this your self as i'm no longer able to wager your P-4 form and that i would not challenge to attempt. final, i would not evaluate spending the dough in this processor except you need to get a minimum of a three.0, minimum. in case you may't get a three.0 then do no longer waste your cash. My opinion.
