Just got a new goldfish for the kids, It is joining a friend. I was told that it must fisrt go in the bag it is in so it can adjust to the water temp, how long does this take?

Leave the bag floating in the tank for 15 mins then open the bag and add half a cup of water every 10 mins then use a net to take them out and release them into the tank, I hope they arent in a bowl, 20 galminimum or they wil die in 1-2 months and the kids will not be happy chappies!

just put the bag into the water for about 15 20 mins then open the bag and scoop it out in a net

You should allow 15-20 minutes, but you need to do more than just let the temperature adjust. Follow the instructions in this link: http://www.fishlore.com/acclimating-tropicalfish.htm

Just 15minutes. That gives the water in the bag time to acclimate to the water in the tank. :)

20 minutes or so should be fine.
