I have a RES and a Guatemalan slider and they spend all of their time in the water. I have a rock in the aquarium with a light on it but they never go on it. I've tried adjusting the height of the light so the rock would be different temperatures but they still dont like it. Ive even picked them up an put them on the rock, one of them stays for a min an then jumps back into the water the other immediatly jumps off.

don't worry give them sometime. i find that everytime you go near it they tend to swim in the water. i guess they are trying to get protection by going in to water.you sliders may be going on the rock when you are not there. i won't worry if they don't have soft shell yet

They will occasionly go onto the rock but only when they feel like basking in the light...most of the time turtles especially it being a RES and Guatemalan slider, spend the majority of their time in the water

You need to make sure the temperature of the heat lamp is correct. Use an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer and tape the probe end to the basking rock. It should read around 95F. Adjust the height of the light accordingly, or hook it up to a dimmer switch. Also, they must have UVB and this must be above the basking rock as well. Leave both on for 12 hours a day. Make sure the basking rock or platform is easy to climb out onto. See:

Don't worry about it, they might just be scared of you being in the room. Mine will never stay on the basking area as long as someone is in the room or in the hall were they can see us. They use it when no one is around. But, they do spend a lot of their time in the water.

They are aquatic turtles and will spend the majority of their time in the water. They only need to bask when their bodies are cold.

They probably don't like it because they smell you on it. Also, those types of turtles dont' typically like anything to do with dry spots, so try an underwater feature for them.
