This is for the preparation of aspirin by using salicylic acid and acetic anhydride with phosphoric acid as a catalyst.

Add dilute aqueous ferric chloride solution. If salicylic acid is there, the solution will turn purple. Be careful, however: Even the freshest prepared aspirin can test purple, because it hydrolyzes all the time.

You're looking to test for the presence of acid.
Does it change acid-base indicator color.
Does it make blue litmus turn red, does it make universal indicator turn red.
(More technical: is there the characteristic OH stretch for a carboxylic acid in the I.R. spectrum)

Look for the absence or presence of the phenolic H in the NMR
