I'm sure a lot of people wonder. I was watching an interview last night with Michael Moore (don't ask what show because I've forgotten) and someone said something about being a "conservative Republican", as if you can be anything but a conservative Republican. I mean, is it possible to be a liberal Republican? Just wondering. I know what it means to be Republican and Democrat and even Moderate, but people nowadays saying they're conservative Democrats or liberal Republicans confuses me to be honest. What's the difference?

This has more to do with the misuse of the terms “liberal” and “conservative.” I for one reject the idea of referring to ANYONE on the political Left as a “liberal.” Liberals use to be those who favoured 19th century liberalism (aka, classical liberalism). The term “conservative” was applied to them by Socialists during the early 20th century and referred primarily to the fact that the “classical liberals” were deemed to be clinging to a concept of liberalism that was considered outdated. They were supposed to be “progressive” and willing to embrace new currents in social theories and ideas. Eventually the term stuck and they began referring to themselves as “conservatives”. Unfortunately during the 1980’s when the Christian political movement became active, they were also identified as “conservatives.” In this case it was somewhat accurate, in that they were social conservatives even though most religious people were more Socialist or Collectivist in economic matters. Their alignment with Republicans was usually limited to “abortion” and “homosexuality.” But the same can be said of many people on the political Left who would never support a Republican or call themselves “conservatives.”

These days when someone says they are a ‘conservative Republican” they actually mean that they are “libertarians” who support or are members of the Republican Party.

So you see how those two terms get really confusing?

A conservative Republican would be like saying,'I'm a traditional Rebublican.' Normally, this means a conservative fiscal attitude (no operating in the red like Bush enjoys doing!), morally conservative (no legal abortions, etc.), socially conservative (less welfare, student loans, public funding of arts, etc...) and they generally concentrate more on economy and foriegn affairs than on other issues. A moderate or liberal Republican would have different views on one or more of those issues. For example, Arnold the Governator would be considered a moderate to liberal Republican.

not all conservatives are Republicans, nor are all Republicans conservative. frequently, conservatives desire to maintain issues the way they are or return to the way issues have been and to rigidity the cost of classic companies, such because of fact the church. as an occasion, conservatives have been adverse to the French Revolution and supported the King. Conservatives supported slavery and have been adverse to the abolitionists. Conservatives adverse the hot Deal and the social revolution in the 1960's and 70's.

Liberals are for supporting the troops and going after "real" terrorists - while ending the war in Iraq

Liberals are for preserving the Constitution and Civil Liberties and keeping our Nation free

Conservatives are for setting up permanant bases in the Middle East and policing the World as well as setting up a police State here in America with National ID's and camera's all over the place. They want you on 100 cams a day, tracking your every move and phone call because you are a terrorist until proven innocent.

Conservatives are for creating a sense of National fear to retain power often talking about 9/11 to reinforce their agenda

That is the difference - and right now its the only difference.

Either you are with us (Conservative) or you are against us (Liberal) "Dick Cheney"

Conservative is political philosophy. Republican is the name of a political party. Anyone, regardless of his beliefs, can be a member of the Republican Party. All you have to do is register to vote at the court house.
I am a conservative. But I am a registered Democrat. I vote the way I want to vote.

A conservative republican believes that the earth is flat, Clinton is to blame for everything, and the universe is six thousand years old.

They also believe that the US Constitution is,"Just a piece of paper," as their leader, GW Bush stated.

They do not believe in freedom for everyone, only other conservative republicans.

They like to lie and say that they are for freedom for all, but in practice, they are not. This makes them hypocrites as well.

They also like to wrap themselves in the flag, and say that they support the military, but rarely display the flag properly, or join the military themselves.
