The tune was originally in a dance rhythm called a gigue, but it was considered too lively for Queen Victoria so we've got out present dirge. It's nice and simple for drunk football fans.
When in doubt, you can usually nick a good tune from the Germans. The triumphant march towards the end of Beethoven's fifth is good stirring stuff. Now can we come up with some words that won't offend the Scots (or not very much)

If you think it's boring, you're in a musical minority. Haydn was so impressed with it that he started work on a tune for the Austrian Emperor - he came up with the "Emperor's Hymn", the tune of which is still the German anthem. W.C. Bach liked GSTK enough to use it in the slow movement of a harpsichord concerto. Beethoven commented, "The English don't realise what a treasure they possess in their national anthem."
Judging by your question and the comments, some of us still don't.

Even though the words aren't particularly favourable to the the British, the Marseillaise has a very stirring tune with a very powerful sentiment, but dignified and inspiring too. everything our national anthem isn't!

Find or hire an British musician like Elton John or the Beatles or any artist and let them think about it. That's what I would do. However, are you serious? I am not British but I still love your anthem.

I suppose a rewrite of GSTQ could help or a song like Rule Britannia. There are some very rousing versions of that.
EDIT: Skeff- You remind me of (p)Rik from the young ones with what you said lol. :D no offence meant btw your entitiled to your opinion but its just somethinghe would say lol.

I think it should be about the country rather than the monarch.
I always feel that the German national anthem sounds very patriotic and strong.

I suggest we get a top guitarist (Plant, Slash, whoever) to come on stage and rework it, just like Hendrix reworked the Star-Spangled Banner for Woodstock. Same tune, but with added explosions he he he... that'll get things started.
For percussion we could have olympic staff shaking charity tins and asking for donations to try to offset the cost of the event....
