The hard drive on my computer is messed up and I want to delete it and reinstall Windows. However, I have 5,000 songs on there and I don't want to lose those. Can I create a new partition on my hard drive and put all the songs into there?

Copy all the songs to another drive, or a DVD, etc.

Assuming you only have a single hard drive, boot up with an XP cd, delete the partition, then recreate a new partition in the empty space

There are some utilities (like fips) that will let you partition your drive on the fly like that. None of them guarantee your data though, so you're pressing your luck doing that. I've done it in the past with no problems and I've done it and had problems, so there's no assurance that you'll keep all your songs.

The best thing you can do is use a second hard drive or a large thumb drive and dump the songs to that then wipe the original hard disk entirely.

If the songs mean that much to you, I would prefer to invest in some external storage, like a stand-along hard drive. They come in handy and can be a life-saver in the event of a crash (that is, provided you backed up everything).

go ahead and purchase a portable external harddrive and transfer your songs on that, who knows you may need one in the future to backup files and data it only makes sense. good luck!!
