To a certain degree can it not be argued that only draftable wars (wars that the public would not oppose being drafted for) should be conducted? I mean if the public allows itself to be drafted its a sign of the legitimacy of the war isn't it?

The draft would end the Iraq war pretty damn quick.

People will support it if this country fights a real war, especially if it fought on our own continent. I am someone who comes from Russia, and my grandparents lived in an era where the Soviet Union lost 30 MILLION combined citizens/soldiers in World War 2. If something like that were to happen, where our people are actually living in fear of the possibility of enemy soldiers coming to our houses and threatening our families, then we would see support for the draft. Right now, everyone sympathizes with our soldiers, but even most proponents of the war, in the back of their minds, probably do not feel that if we pull out of Iraq, our safety will be in immediate jeapordy. Yes, Al Queda will rush to Iraq (they already have), but they are in Pakistan, Sudan, Afghanistan, and in every crack in between. It is not news that you can't fight terrorism, an IDEOLOGY WITH SPONTANEOUS SUPPORT WHICH GROWS EXPONENTIALLY IN A TIME OF MILITARY CONFRONTATION, with an army. As long as we support Israel and have back-door deals with Saudi Arabia, Islamic extremism will be a problem. If we will always have those two aspects going, the Iraq war can realistically last as long (forever).

Anyways, 3500 U.S. deaths so far. In military terms, this is a very small number, and in the end, no one will stand for a draft for an unpopular war in which casualties are relatively low (i.e., draft would not be needed if war was managed well).

I don't know about when it's acceptable to have a draft, but I don't think the people will ever support it. Those that lived through the draft know how random it can be, and how difficult it is on the people who are drafted and their families, so I don't think they'd ever vote for one.

Younger people seem to be the majority of those that don't support the war, so I don't see them voting for it either.

A draft will never be supported in this country, watch how fast the people who claim to support the war change their tune when their children get drafted to die in Iraq!!! Might be a good way to end the war!!!

I have always supported the draft. I enlisted after I graduated from high school in 1968. I didn't wait around to be drafted, our country was at war. I was patriotic and believe that people should serve our country. I served, my wife was in the air force and our daughter is serving in Iraq.

I doubt if there's enough patriotism (real patriotism, not the phony stuff being displayed these days) left in America to ever support the draft, again. But, all it takes is a strong President to ininstitute it.

To me there should never be a draft! Perhaps only if this country gets invaded but at that point a draft wouldn't even be needed!

Forced military service is very anti-liberty

People will only support a draft in the most dire conditions. No one likes to be forced into anything.

Extreme emergency. Which might generate enough volunteers. Volunteer good, Draft bad.

It is acceptable if and only if we have a foreign aggressor on our soil.

No wars of conquest, no wars of 'defense' fought across the planet. Actual defense is defending your land, if that is needed a draft is needed.
